India’s Inflation Hits 6.21%: What’s Driving It?
India's inflation rate rose to 6.21% in October 2024, hitting a 14-month high due to significant increases in food prices, especially for vegetables, fruits, and oils. This breach of the RBI’s 6% tolerance level may delay any rate cuts as the central bank aims to curb inflation.
Hello,
The markets opened higher but quickly turned lower, resulting in steep losses, with little expectation of a meaningful recovery in the near term. As the rupee hits all-time lows, the RBI is likely intervening by selling dollars to support the currency amid a broader decline in Asian currencies. In October, India's retail inflation rose to 6.21%, surpassing the RBI's tolerance band for the first time since August 2023, read more about it here. Meanwhile, the 260-year-old travel brand 'Cox & Kings' has been revived under new leadership by Wilson & Hughes PTE. Swiggy's shares are anticipated to have a modest listing post-IPO, with analysts advising long-term holding of the stock.
As of 12/11/24
The Indian stock market faced a challenging day as early optimism quickly waned, leading to a steep decline. Despite a positive opening on yesterday, momentum faded as investors resumed their 'sell on the rise' approach. This swift selling pressure prevented any meaningful recovery, leaving the indices weak throughout the day.
The persistent trend of selling during rallies has kept the markets in a downward slide, hindering any substantial rebound. Notably, this pressure extended beyond India, with other Asian markets also closing with notable losses.
The RBI is likely selling dollars to support the rupee amid a decline in Asian currencies.
